Elegy: Out of Lemon Flowers
for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Violin, Viola, and Cello
USC Thornton Edge; Donald Crockett, conductor
Program Note:
This piece was initially inspired by Pablo Neruda’s poem, A Lemon. Charged with sensory appeal, Elegy describes the blossoming, picking, and cutting of a lemon that can be metaphorically compared to many aspects of human life. Elegy: Out of Lemon Flowers, is my musical representation of the sensory overload that occurs by the literal act of smelling, feeling, tasting, and picking a fresh lemon off of a tree and then also the representation of the more metaphorical and sensual comparisons Neruda makes in his work.
